How Gas Networks Are Supporting Households – And What You Need to Know

When you think about your gas supply, you probably think of the company who you pay your gas bill to. But behind the scenes, there’s a different organisation making sure gas actually gets to your home safely—and that’s where Gas Distribution Networks (GDNs) come in.

But across the UK, GDNs do more than just deliver gas – they invest in the communities they serve, provide additional support to households in vulnerable circumstances, and help raise awareness of serious issues like fuel poverty and carbon monoxide safety.

What Is a Gas Distribution Network (GDN)?

Gas Distribution Networks, or GDNs, are the companies that bring gas to your home.

They don’t send you a bill (that’s your gas supplier’s job), but they make sure gas gets to you safely through underground pipes.

There are four main GDNs in the UK, and each one looks after a different area.

They also work together and with organisations like IE Hub to help people who need extra support, like if you’re struggling with money or staying warm.

What’s the Difference Between a Gas Distribution Network and Your Gas Supplier?

Your gas supplier is the company you pay for your gas—like British Gas, Octopus, or EDF. You choose who you get your gas from.

Your GDN (Gas Distribution Network) is the company that runs the pipes underground and brings the gas to your home. You don’t choose them—they cover certain areas of the UK.

You don’t pay your GDN, but they still help you—especially if you’re having money problems, need extra support, or have a gas emergency.

How Can a GDN Help YOU?

In Pocket Perspectives Podcast, we sat down with experts from several GDNs to hear exactly how they support communities, often in ways you might not expect.

👇 Here’s a quick overview of what was covered, but we really recommend giving the episodes a listen to get the full picture:

The Priority Services Register (PSR)

The Priority Services Register is a free support service that provides extra help to people who may need it – such as those living with health conditions, a disability, or who are of pension age.

If you’re on the PSR, you can access services like:

  • Advance notice of planned power cuts
  • Priority support in emergencies
  • Meter readings and accessible formats of information

One of our guests shared a real-life story of how the PSR helped a vulnerable customer stay safe and connected.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness

Carbon monoxide is a silent killer- you can’t see it, smell it, or taste it.

That’s why GDNs put so much focus on helping people understand the warning signs of CO poisoning and how to stay safe.

In the podcast, we discuss:

  • What the signs of CO poisoning are
  • Why having a CO alarm is so important
  • What support is available if you can’t afford one

GDNs often provide free alarms and advice—especially to customers who are vulnerable or at risk.

Fuel Poverty in the UK

Fuel poverty means not being able to afford to keep your home warm. With rising costs, this is something more and more households are struggling with.

We talked about:

  • The real impact of cold homes on health and wellbeing
  • Barriers that stop people from getting help
  • Why so much support goes unclaimed

🎧 In the second episode, our guests share where to find help, how to access energy grants, and what advice they’d give to anyone struggling with high bills.

What Is VCMA Funding (and How Can It Help You)?

A big question people often ask is: “What’s the catch?” when GDNs offer support. The truth is, there isn’t one.

That’s because much of the help GDNs offer is funded through something called VCMA – the Vulnerability and Carbon Monoxide Allowance.

It’s a dedicated pot of money used to fund projects that:

  • Support vulnerable customers
  • Raise awareness of CO risks
  • Fund community partnerships and outreach

You’ll hear how this funding has been used to launch life-changing projects and what’s coming next.
